Interview

The Crocketts take San Antonio, Part II

May 26, 2017

(Source: Sierra Brown) Charley Crockett is the kind of man who reminds you why the word swagger exists. He is pure southern charm, with roots in Texas (tracing his heritage directly back to Alamo hero Davy Crockett!) and Louisiana but influences from around the world. He’s a cosmopolitan cowboy: the type of guy who seems like he’d fit in anywhere he goes, from tiny little towns in the Middle of Nowhere, TX to the largest cities in the world. His style, demeanor, and attitude are timeless. I got to talk to Charley and see him perform in Helotes, TX at John T. Floore Country Store. While not quite in the middle of nowhere, Helotes isn’t exactly at the forefront of Texas tourism. It’s a small town outside of San Antonio and home to some of the prettiest views in the state. John T. Floore’s, located right in the heart of old downtown Helotes, is a legendary venue. The walls of the greenroom are plastered with posters from old shows. Willie Nelson, Robert Earl Keene, and more have graced the stage. Just sitting there, you can feel the history of the venue. (Source: Sierra Brown) On stage, Charley performs with the grace of a classical musician. He sings, he dances, and he plays his guitar like no one else. He feels the music and plays off his band, creating this energy that draws the crowd in. His music is like a good thrift store: modern enough to be inviting but authentically vintage. The rest of his band was also great, with the kind of sound that only comes from performance after performance. (Source: Sierra Brown) Talking to Charley was so much fun. I found out we have the same favorite thrift store (shout out to Dolly Python in Dallas!) and so much more about him and his life. He is one of the kindest, most genuine guys I have ever gotten to talk to. Our interview was interrupted a few times by other band members and a lonely Bluetooth speaker that just wanted to connect to something, but we laughed it off and kept going. All it did was make the interview more real, which I think fits Charley.
