Scotty Sire's House of Blues Show
On November 6th, 2019, I had the opportunity to be front and center at Scotty Sire’s What’s Going On Tour show in Houston, taking photos. Sire started his career on the social media app Vine, and then eventually to it to YouTube, frequently making appearances in David Dobrik’s vlogs, before adding recording artist to his already impressive resume. The What’s Going On Tour certainly won’t be his last. From start to finish, every second of his show was fun, entertaining, and kept you wanting more.
Sire brought three opening acts with him to the show. Some might find that too many, and that it will upset the fans by prolonging bringing out the main artist, but each of the opening acts brought out a different taste and made the wait fly by. The first opening act, Chris Bloom, showed off his sweet vocals and made the crowd swoon. The second, Bruce Wiegner, who has also made cameos in David Dobrik’s vlogs, is a producer, songwriter, and artist. His music is an interesting blend of genres, which makes for a unique pop style. The fans at House of Blues were going crazy for his music. The final opening, SonReal, is a Canadian singer-songwriter whose energy nearly surpassed that of the crowd. By the end of his set, the audience was in a fantastic mood and couldn’t contain their excitement for Scotty Sire.
With the crowd chanting “Scotty, Scotty!”, the lights dimmed, and one by one, they came out. Chris Bloom and Bruce Wiegner returned to the stage as members of the band, as well as Toddy Smith, another member of David Dobrik’s Vlog Squad. Then, finally, out came Scotty Sire. The stage lights went up and the crowd went wild as he started singing his song “F.O.M.O.” For that song, and every song that followed, everyone in the crowd was singing and dancing along. Sire interacted with the crowd, and had fun little dance sketches with his band, which made the show not only fun to listen to, but very fun to watch as well.
However, Sire didn’t stick to only his songs. He performed Queen’s “Radio GaGa”, Five Seconds of Summer’s “She Looks So Perfect”, and Twenty One Pilot’s “Ride”. These were fun surprises which showed us what kind of music he likes to listen to, giving the audience a taste of his taste outside of his own music.
Even when Sire would slow it down, the energy on stage and in the audience never died down, but only grew stronger. During a small interlude, where Sire and his band went to change into customized baseball jerseys, the audience was still entertained, as there was an audio recording of Sire talking about his tour and how it is self-funded, thanking the audience, and making jokes. There was never a dull moment during the show.
Sire made sure that this show would be an interactive experience. Sire and Smith jumped off stage a few times during the set to be closer to fans and they responded to comments yelled out from the audience. For example, when my roommate yelled out “I love you!” Smith responded with “how much?”. Sire made his fans feel special all throughout the show, from the openers that he chose, to the way he ended it. He put on a truly fantastic performance, leaving me hopeful for another tour soon.
