Album review: Bassnectar's "Noise VS Beauty"

By

Bassnectar is a master at combining beautiful sound with heavyweight force. At a Bassnectar show, the engulfing sound of dense bass in conjunction with a visual spectacle has the crowd feeling a range of emotions. From his modest beginnings of playing guitar in a heavy metal band in high school, you can now catch Bassnectar headlining many of the premiere music festivals in the world. He will be headlining Electric Forest, Okeechobee and Bonnaroo during the 2020 festival season just to name a few. Additionally, he hosts 5 of his own music festivals: Deja Voom, BassCenter, NYE360, Freestyle Sessions and Be Interactive 808.

The album, Noise VS Beauty, is great for music fans from all genres. It features tracks for everyone ranging from dreamy, melodic tunes to dense, forceful tracks that bring the listener through a full experience of the senses. With its beats per minute ranging anywhere from 80 to 160, the album really is a constant battle between “noise” and “beauty”. We lead into the album with “F.U.N.” and the title is not misleading whatsoever. It starts like a soft, easy Sunday stroll but next thing you know, you’re ready to take that easy stroll to more of a 5K race intensity. As we continue, we find a track, titled “You & Me”, that became popular featuring stunning vocals from W. Darling that compliment the low range bass perfectly. We are BUZZING at this point and primed for a peak. “Noise” featuring Donnis is the summit. If “F.U.N.” has you ready to run a 5K, “Noise” will have you ready to run through a brick wall. Bassnectar shows his mastery of Ableton creating some of the densest music available today. Now that we reached the summit, we begin our descent featuring beats that’ll have you moving but maybe isn’t putting your speakers at such a risk of busting. The album concludes with “Flash Back”, which really makes you feel those wubs we love so much, and then “So Butterfly”. The last track, “So Butterfly”, is a shoutout of sorts to Bassnectar’s followers. Why? Because Butterfly Beings Drink Bass Nectar.

Tune into University Wubs, a new show specializing in heavy bass and cool electronic sounds, every Thursday from 11-12PM. Tonight we will be highlighting some of the tracks mentioned above as well as others from artists like: Flume, Ganja White Night, ODESZA, and many more!
