Peanut Butter and HUNNY Sandwich
If the British Invasion met fidget spinners and California, the band right at the heart of the intersection would be HUNNY. Pulling influences from around the world, the five-piece band has been consistently making music that could just as easily be sunny rock as it could grungy beach tunes. They joined the ranks of great bands that have toured with The Neighbourhood a few years ago, and have since been continuing to put out great tracks. Their latest EP, Windows I, is technically complex with lyrics that are light enough to learn by heart but heavy enough to leave an impact. (Source: Sierra Brown) I saw HUNNY live at Three Links in Deep Ellum, a small and intimate venue right in the heart of the area. They expressed a deep love for performing live when I interviewed them, and that was really prominent when they were playing. The crowd must have picked up on it, as well, because I saw more participation from them than from any other crowd I’ve been around lately. At one point, during the small pause in “Televised,” someone got the band drinks when they asked for one. The band encouraged them, at one point saying “This is a dance number, feel free to start a conga line or something.” They also interacted with their fans while onstage, taking the time to correct them when they sang the wrong lyrics. (Source: Sierra Brown) Beyond being a ton of fun, the guys are all seriously impressive musicians. The instrumental parts were intricate and well executed. Vocally, their harmonies were delicate and tight. They commanded the small, intimate stage and created an immersive environment. At the same time, they weren’t afraid to be a little silly. During “Cry for Me,” the guys layered short covers over their song. I can’t even begin to describe how incredible this was, but my friend over at ThieNewBand.com captured it and posted the video on Twitter at https://twitter.com/ThisNewBand/status/871567160232992768. During their show, they said one of the most relatable things I’ve ever heard: “My one true love is… less talk more rock.” (Source: Sierra Brown) I got to hang out with HUNNY for a little while before their show. They were so genuine and kind, and we had a grand old time during our interview. Listen to it below!
