Small Band Spotlight

April 8, 2016

Have you ever wondered what obscure genre to explore to somehow still keep your hipster self-irrelevant? Well then look no further than the next three words: space jazz rap. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “You can’t just put three words together and call it a genre. That’s not how it works.” That’s how it works now.

These guys are The Boombachs, a seven-piece space jazz rap group from Denton, Texas. How much more hipster does it get? In 2012, they released a five-song EP called

We Are Aliens

, their debut album. They were truly revolutionary, garnering multiple dozens of fans. In 2013, they were back with a new album:

Post-Apocalyptic Stress Syndrome

.

This was another five song EP, but it was more rap-based than space or jazz. If you’re trying to show off your underground music to all your non-hipster friends, stick with the other albums. This one is good, but it’s not out-there enough to seem completely out of touch with the rest of the musical world. After releasing this album they spent some time doing whatever bands do to make music and released a new album in Summer 2015.

This album,

AlienNation

, was a ten track album that puts you right back into the good stuff. Bringing back the space jazz influences from their first album, this is just the thing to make sure no one wants you to DJ their party. They included new mixes of a few old songs, along with solid new singles and a few short interludes to make you think you’re about to listen to a full-length song.

The Boombachs are a great band to show your friends to prove that you don’t like conventional music — you have refined musical tastes. Make sure to tell them “this isn’t a phase” or “they’re albums are really hard to get ahold of” to really get the point across. If you’re interested in hearing them, you can find their albums on iTunes and Spotify.
