Thankful Thursday Week 2: Adele Turns 21
Turning 21 means a lot of things, from being able to legally drink to being able to rent a car (finally) to being able to gamble, 21 is the formal introduction to being an actual adult. It's an intimidating and exciting age to be. It comes as no surprise then that Adele wrote one of her best and popular albums at the age of 21. More mature than her 19 year old self, 21 is an album that showcases that maturity, not only with her lyrics but also with the progression her music had made over the years between 19 and 21. A mature and honestly, really sad album, the transitions between each song are incredibly smooth, and the themes for each one all blend together very well. Inspired by some friends that she made after releasing 19, Adele wrote the song about the couple and their struggle with dealing with heroin addiction and sobriety. The song starts out more upbeat than the previous songs on her album, especially adding emphasis on drums and piano. The lyrics themselves are incredibly powerful, many of them giving an inside look into the relationship the couple has and their dedication to each other. "But I won't go/ I can't do it on my own/ If this ain't love, then what is?/ I'm willing to take the risk". Knowing now that the lyrics are relating to someone who is learning how to accept sobriety, the theme of the song becomes that no matter how hard their relationship might be, it's all worth it in the end. However, despite their desire to make the relationship work, the couple still has doubts and fears about how their relationship might end, "Will he... will he still remember me?/ Will he still love me even when he's free?/ Or will he go back to the place where he would choose the poison over me?". It's refreshing to hear a song that addresses the strength and weaknesses of a relationship, especially one like this. Not every couple deals with addiction issues, and it's hard to find songs that can put those feelings into music in such an eloquent way. 21 is a serious album and it's known widely as a "breakup album" by almost all of her fans, but it's songs like "He Won't Go" that interest me the most. Adele isn't a kid anymore, and after having her heart broken it seems as if she's become aware of the struggles that other couples face in their relationships as well, even the ones that seem perfect on the outside. 21 is dark, but so is Adele, and she makes it very known that she's not afraid to write songs and make music that showcases just how sad someone can really be.
