Eman Laerton by Curtis Riddle
We are on the phone with Eman Laerton from Youhavebadtasteinmusic.com. So, the first question on everybody’s mind is: “What is good music?”
Well, good music is music that has been scientifically shown to not be bad music.
So where is Scientific Proof Magazine from, and when did they start?
I think Scientific Proof Magazine has been around for…uhh…actually next June they’ll be celebrating their 20th anniversary. And Scientific Proof Magazine started out in Wichita of all places, and there are now 23 staff scientists on the payroll at Scientific Proof Magazine, so they have grown to quite a large organization.
So they do some pretty extensive research?
They do, they do. They actually study…I guess the last year they tested over ten thousand albums. Don’t doubt the scientific method, right?
You can’t argue with it. It’s proof.
No, no, that’s the whole thing. We’re not talking about opinion here, okay, we’re talking about scientific fact. For the longest time people have always said music is a matter of taste, it’s subjective. No no. I mean, 2 + 2 = 4.
Well, what was the thought process behind this website? Like, did you just wake up one morning and say “You know, I’m going to make it a priority to go tell people that they have bad taste in music.” How did you reach where you are today?
Well, initially it was just going to be a short film, but once we made a website for it, we realized that it works much better as a website. But really the inspiration was Heavy Metal Parking Lots. Jeff Krulik, his web site is planetkrulik.com and you can watch Heavy Metal Parking Lot, which all he did was taking a camera to the parking lot of a 1985 Judas Priest concert, and it’s about the greatest slice of Americana you’ve ever seen. So I was just going to go to a concert with my camera, but I thought, you know what there’s a better way to get this great information I have found in the June issue of Scientific Proof Magazine to the people who need to hear it the most.
