In light of the current protests across the U.S. and the world, KVRX and KANM (UT and A&M student radio stations) have come together to highlight and support Black artists from across Texas for Bandcamp Friday, tomorrow, June 5th. Bandcamp Friday is an event where Bandcamp waives its revenue share on all sales, letting musicians keep 100% of their sales revenue. In support of small Black artists from our home state, we wanted to share this list so that we as a music community can show our support.

College Radio has always had a diverse, revolutionary culture that is built upon the idea of sharing music that doesn’t always receive mainstream attention. Current mainstream “indie” music has become extremely centered around white, straight male artists singing songs about their “plights,” with black artists often being ignored or relegated to hip-hop and rap categories. In the revolutionary spirit of college radio, KVRX and KANM want to support Black artists who are putting out amazing music but aren’t getting the attention they so rightly deserve. Even though Black musicians have always led trends for new and cutting edge music—from rhythm and blues, rock and roll to hip-hop and experimental pop music—their achievements have often been overlooked in favor of less-talented white musicians.

In supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, it is important to make sure to celebrate the achievements of Black lives who have contributed so much to our culture.
