Travis Scott's ASTROWORLD Festival

November 20, 2019

Travis Scott’s second hometown festival, Astroworld Festival, was another success for the multi-platinum hip-hop artist. Travis’ fans trusted him with pulling off another great festival as the show sold out weeks before the lineup was released. Travis came back with an even better lineup this fall, adding three more artists than last year. The lineup consisted of up-and-comers such as PopSmoke and Don Toliver, alongside headliners like Young Thug and Playboi Carti. There were also surprise guests at the show like Kanye West, Swae Lee, and even famous comedian, Dave Chappelle.

There were over 50,000 attendees at the multi-stage stage event this year and each artists’ set was full of energy. With electrifying performances from the Migos and heavy rock and roll vibes from Marilyn Manson, the festival put a special emphasis on expanding to genres beyond hip-hop and rap. The crowd at each set was massive and filled with thousands of ragers ready to mosh at every beat drop. Due to the sheer size of the crowd, there was no space to move near the front. It could be described as being a seaweed stuck at the bottom of the ocean, only moving when the surrounding water moves while your feet are planted into the ground. Although it could get scary at times, being in the crowd was a special experience.

AstroFest has now become the largest single-day artist-curated music festival in the country, as well as the largest music festival in Houston. One of the most popular highlights for the festival attendees was the “Screwed Up Records pop-up shop”, which served as a tribute to the Houston legend DJ Screw and was designed to replicate the original Screwed Up Records storefront. The shop featured rare merch and an archive of chopped-and-screwed mixtapes produced by DJ Screw. The festival was again successful in bringing back the nostalgic feel of AstroWorld and Houston from Scott’s childhood. Fans had the opportunity to relive the former AstroWorld experience through the festival’s extensive amusement park theme and aesthetic, which featured many games and rides. Astroworld Festival helped Travis Scott’s childhood dream come true for another year as he grew up in nearby Missouri City just outside of Houston and attended the SixFlags AstroWorld amusement park, which once stood across the street from the current festival grounds, numerous times as a child with his family and friends.
