My 5 Favorite LGBT Anthems of 2018

January 7, 2019

With 2018 coming to a close in just a few days, I wanted to go ahead and take a moment to remind everyone of some of the amazing, glorious, queer music that we got in 2018. Here are my picks for my personal 5 favorite LGBT songs of 2018.

Pynk- Janelle Monae featuring Grimes

After coming out as pansexual and releasing a plethora of amazing queer bangers, Janelle Monae released the song “Pynk” as a single for her 2018 album

Dirty Computer

. “Pynk” is a beautiful and lowkey ballad to feminine power.

1999- Charli XCX & Troye Sivan

Charli XCX and Troye Sivan team up for one of the most energetic pop songs of the year, an anthem to youth and freedom. Not only the blissful freedom of youth but the freedom of being comfortable in your own skin. Troye even delivers a line reminiscing when he would fanaticize about JTT, which is really just the icing on the cake here.

Sentence- Bladee

I know what you’re thinking, “Why in God’s name is Bladee on this list? What is KANM on??” Allow me to explain. Bladee is probably one of the hardest to define characters in music today. No one is sure what genre he is, no one can ever tell if he’s serious or not, and he throughout his music he is constantly attempting to wriggle his way out of any labels that have been put on him. It’s funny how all of these things have almost accidentally made Bladee the perfect candidate for a queer icon, seeing as the queer community consists of an entire group of young people trying to wriggle out of their own labels society has given them. On “Sentence”, one of Bladee’s most lowkey cuts of his very productive 2018, Bladee barely whispers about his own agonies in just trying to be himself. “I’m trying to trick myself… I’m lying to myself… I don’t even feel like me”

Noid- Yves Tumor

Speaking of despising being defined, Yves Tumor is a master at it. On his single “Noid” for the album

Safe in the Hands of Love,

Yves is begging the listener to understand him without trying to label him. To be known without being stereotyped. All queer people especially trans can relate to this struggle in 2018. Yves complains about the labels given to queer people- “they call it a sickness, PTSD, Depression”, and refuses to be part of society’s labels for him- “I’m not part of their killing spree”. Not only is this song a beautiful shout that all queer people can relate to, but also it is a BANGER.

Immaterial- SOPHIE

Not only is this song my personal favorite on this list, it is my favorite single of 2018 hands down. SOPHIE has transcended everything on “Immaterial”, a song that serves as the climax to her stunning 2018 album

Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides.

SOPHIE transcends not only gender and society’s “roles” for her. She transcends the very sound of pop music, creating an all-new futuristic sound for pop that only she can reside in. Shouting over a bass made of bubblegum; she proclaims, “I can be anything I want, anyhow, any place, anyone that I want!” If SOPHIE has captured a snapshot of the future, then the future is bright and beautiful.
