Video Killed the Motel (Radio) Star

July 14, 2017

I can only think of one reason to dislike Motel Radio: they all went to LSU. Now, I know that can be hard to get over since that makes them our SEC rivals, but their music more than makes up for their poor choice in school.   (Source: Sierra Brown) In all seriousness, the guys in Motel Radio are seriously cool. The first iteration of the band saw its heyday playing covers on campus then went on through a few more changes, finally ending up where they are today. In the few years since the guys themselves were students just like us, they’ve grown into their own sound, matured as musicians, and developed into the band they are now. (Source: Sierra Brown) Their music is the kind of stuff that just makes you want to sway. It’s flowy, relaxing, but just bright enough to make you pay attention. It’s the kind of music I want to play on sunny days in a field full of flowers while someone takes a cool slow motion video of me. It’s really great in how it has no true genre. I could play this for hippies who just got out of yoga, cool kids going thrifting with overpriced cold brew in their hands, and basically everyone I know. They weave together many influences in a way that makes sense. Motel Radio’s music is not one thing or another, it simply is.   (Source: Sierra Brown) The show I went to in Dallas was at the Sundown at Granada, which is a restaurant adjacent to the Granada Theater that converts to a small secondary venue late at night. The Granada is already one of my favorite venues, and that love definitely extends to Sundown. That night, Motel Radio was the headliner, so they went on fairly late. I expected this, but the 11:45 pm set time still initially threw me for a loop. I stuck it out, though, and staying up past my 9:30 pm bedtime for them was definitely well worth it. The intimate nature of the venue fit their music perfectly. They put on a really solid show that was a joy to watch and an even greater joy to listen to, and being so close to them really allowed for a connection. Most of us had never met the people around us, but it felt like we were all at a small house show (just with a much better sound system). Before the show, I hung out with a couple of the guys at a rooftop bar. We mainly went there because it was quiet, but I’m digging how cool it makes us sound. We talked a lot about our dogs, which was great for me, but I also asked them some real questions and recorded their answers. Check out the interview below! It’s very Scenic Route to Alaska meets Glass Animals meets Duncan Fellows. It's down below along with all of their social media, which you should use to keep up with them! https://youtu.be/6Yv-68MWnPM   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/motelradiomusic/ Twitter: @motelradiomusic Instagram: @motelradiomusic Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/69tXKp8pHBX6ZoVMkNdvt7   Photos and article by Sierra Brown.
