Interview

Back Seat (of the Tour Bus) with Atlas Genius

May 22, 2017

The night I met Atlas Genius, all of my high school dreams came true. I’ve been a fan of theirs since their good old days of When It Was Now and have been following them since they started releasing singles in the US the year before. I was so in love with them that I got my friends hooked as well. I can’t even tell you how many bad puns we made just from the songs “Trojans,” “If So,” and “Backseat” alone. (Source: Sierra Brown) My love has continued to stay strong over the years. There’s just something about their fun, bouncy, upbeat nature that makes me want to dance. That energy in their music is infectious. I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t absolutely adore Atlas Genius. I got to interview Keith in Dallas, and that night may have been the single coolest night of my life. The interview was originally set to take place backstage, meaning that I would get a backstage pass. That alone made me want to jump up and down, but I kept my cool. Unfortunately, the venue had age policies and couldn’t give it to me because I was under 21. Believe it or not, it was harder to keep my cool in that situation than when I found out I even had one. Luckily, their tour manager came to my rescue and moved the interview to the tour bus. (Source: Sierra Brown) I got to interview Keith, the lead vocalist and one of the founding brothers. He was one of the most genuine, kindest guys I have ever met. We laughed as much as we talked, and he even taught me how to make Taco Bell food vegan. While talking, he found out that I wasn’t allowed backstage because of my age. His response to this was to bring me backstage himself, slap a wristband on me, and allow me to shoot the show from the wings of the stage. The two hours I spent hanging out in the green room with the band and their crew were incredible. We played Mario Kart, ate chips and salsa, teased each other, and more. I found out that Keith also has his dog as his phone background, which only made me like him more. During the show, I was right in the action. I watched the entire show from the side of the stage, sometimes even getting to walk out onto the stage to get shots. It was a surreal experience. Atlas Genius is better live than they are on tape. They engaged with each other, the crowd, the lights, and the entire atmosphere of the venue. Everything fed into the show. (Source: Sierra Brown) My night with Atlas Genius was nothing short of magic. While I can’t bring everyone there (or possibly find the words to describe it), I can share my interview.
