| Reuben's Accomplice - In and Out of Key [Better Looking, 2004] Reuben’s Accomplice might very well be the best band that you’ve never heard of (Unless you have heard of them…then afore mentioned statements would not apply). But whether you have or have not heard of them does not change the fact that they are one of the most talented and aurally pleasing bands around. Even though their latest album The Bull, the Balloon and the Family was released in early 2004, I feel that it deserves at least a little acclaim from Frequency. Originating in Phoenix, Arizona, RA has gathered a reputation through the help of Jim Adkins (producer of The Bull, the Balloon and the Family and lead singer of Jimmy Eat World).
Reuben’s Accomplice shares the same power pop tendencies that fans would enjoy from bands like Jimmy Eat World and The Weakerthans, yet has found a niche all its own. One of the themes that the band employs in many songs is the bland desert atmosphere of Arizona and how sometimes life gets a little boring and is in need of a little imagination. The music on the other hand does not imitate the blasé themes of the lyrics. The catchy twang backs the superb melodies that lead singer Jeff Bufano incorporates.
As for the song I picked, “In and Out of Key”, it is impossible to say that this is their best song, or most prominent on the album. There are too many excellent songs to be able to single one out as the best; each is unique and each is amazing. I chose this song because of its melodic design. The tune is absolutely beautiful. It is poppy, yet lyrically advanced. On top of that, Bufano dishes out metaphor after metaphor at the dramatic climax of the song. Everyone out there should listen closely to all the details. You won’t be disappointed. Musically, it starts out peacefull with string plucking, harmonics, and a friendly drum roll here and there. It isn't untill the climax that the electric guitars kick in and starts to blare. It really is a beautiful moment.
Reuben’s Accomplice really is an incredibly underrated band because of their underexposure. Obtaining their albums can be an arduous task away from the internet. But any trouble to get their music will be well worth it. Give “In and Out of Key” an honest listen. If you enjoy, I would highly recommend either of their two albums The Bull, the Balloon, and the Family and I Blame the Scenery.
