Despistado - Plants [Jade Tree, 2005]

Have you ever just come across a band and thought, “wow…this is so amazing, why don’t more people know about them?” It’s definitely not because their music isn’t amazing. It’s due to a lack of outlets. This is an outlet. And this is an amazing band complete with an AMAZING song. You can definitely incorporate body movement when listening to this. Who doesn’t like moving to music?

Upon a first listen to this band, the first impressions are a questioning of whether or not this is an At the Drive In tribute band. The vocal timbre is more than reminiscent of Cedric Bixler-Zavala’s shrill outcries. The guitar is steady and rhythmic just like any other At the Drive-In, or any other post punk type band. I use these comparisons solely to obtain a point of reference for the reader. Despistado is its own band with its unique sound, and not a clone to be pigeon-holed in one genre.

There are five songs on their album that stand out, each having their own qualities. “Plants” is a perfect excerpt of their talent, and a fair representative of the album as a whole. Unfortunately, their tale did not have a happy ending, as they broke up before the release of their album.
