On a night when the indie rock gods of yore were descending upon Stubbs, namely Dinosaur Jr. and Built to Spill, I was sitting across the road in the humble Austin venue known as the Mohawk. Why wasn’t I across the street taking in the sounds of J. Mascis and crew? The reason is simple, local favorites White Denim were playing their CD release show before leaving on a nation wide tour and I was determined to see the boys live again.

White Denim live is an experience like none other. This is my third time seeing White Denim and I must recommend it to everyone. They play a style of music much like spastic psychedelic blues garage rock. Imagine, if you will, a man made entirely of sound, and this man is running at you, full blast, in football regalia… this is how I can best describe what it is like to experience White Denim live. It’s a constant rush of noise and energy. The boys leave everything on the stage, I’m surprised they can carry their equipment off at the end of the night. They play with a tenacity and power that’s so refreshing. Lou Barlow (of Dinosaur Jr) was even rumored to have watched the set, perhaps even he knew what was the most exciting place to be in Austin that evening.

I’d like to point out that White Denim’s new LP Fits is available right now (on Amazon and otherwise) and the major selling point is this, it comes with Fits (the new LP) and a copy of their first album Exposion. That’s two albums worth of material for the price of one. The time to get caught up in this band is now, so jump on board.
